Abstract

Yarn wound into package form in a ring frame on to a dye-pervious tube is transferred without rewinding to a perforated spindle of a dyeing machine, wherein dyeing is effected by <PICT:0886110/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0886110/IV (c)/2> passing dye liquor through the package, the tube and spindle being so formed that the connection between them is of a resilient or collapsible nature, allowing for easy removal of the dyed package from the spindle despite any contraction of the yarn that may have occurred in the package during dyeing. Apparatus suitable for dyeing yarn in package form comprises (as shown in Figs. 1 and 2) a spindle 1 closed at its upper end 1a and apertured at 2 over that part lying within such package and having integral or non-integral resilient or collapsible yieldable supports, e.g. bowed spring fingers 4, disposed longitudinally thereon to engageand be stressed against the interior wall of a tube on which the packaged yarn is wound as the tube is passed on to the spindle. The resilient supports are preferably shaped and positioned so as to hold the tube spaced away from the apertured wall of the spindle. The pervious tube may be constructed of a material, e.g. paper, synthetic resin or other expendable material, which is resistant to the temperatures and chemicals involved in the dyeing machine and the apertures of which are preferably evenly spaced. Instead of bowed spring fingers 4 the resilient supports may be more or less helical in shape. Fingers 4 may be connected to a slidable bush 3 or the tube may be provided with longitudinal grooves 5 (Fig. 2) into which the fingers may slide axially. In a modification (not shown) the bush at the lower end of the tube has a flange designed to fit into the base plate of a dyeing machine. Pivotally or rockably mounted in this bush are two longitudinal segments which tend to converge. However, a plug or cap, when inserted between these segments spreads them apart during dyeing and subsequent removal of the cap permits easy removal of the dyed yarn.
