Abstract
Metals lying below and including magnesium in the electromotive series and alloys thereof are coated with a film of aminoalkylsilicon compound containing the group - N - R - Si in which R is a divalent saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical having a chain of at least three carbon atoms and in which the nitrogen atom is attached to a carbon atom in said aliphatic hydrocarbon radical at least three carbon atoms removed from the silicon atom, and in which each of the free bonds of the nitrogen atom is bonded to a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon or [ -(CH2)a Si] radical in which a is an integer having a value of at least 3, and in which at least one free bond of the silicon atom is attached to an alkyl radical or silicon through silicon-oxygen bonds and the remaining free bonds of the silicon atom are attached to a hydrocarbon group and the aminoalkylsilicon compound is cured on the surface of the metal or alloy to form an adherent coating thereon. The compound may be applied as a solution in water, methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, 2-ethyl-hexanol, the monoethylether of ethylene glycol, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene or mixtures of these solvents, or mixed with propellants such as perchloro- or perfluoromethanes and ethanes for application as an oerosol. The coating may be cured by allowing to stand at ambient temperature or by heating. Many examples of suitable silicon compounds which may be used are given. The metals and alloys which may be coated include aluminium, brass, bronze, copper, chromium, iron, magnesium, nickel, lead, silver, silver-plate, sterling silver, ternplate (tin plate), tin beryllium bronze and zinc. Examples are given of coating strips and panels of these metals. The metals to be coated may be first treated with an acid or alkaline solution or decreasing agent such as trichloroethylene. The coating compositions may also contain petroleum oils.
