Abstract

886,022. Valves. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. May 22, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 17557/58. Class 135. A liquid flow-dividing valve has a valve member 11 slidable in a bore 2 and formed with restricted openings 15, 16 through which the divided flows pass from an inlet 4 to ports 5, 6 leading to outlets 5A, 6A. The pressures downstream of the openings 15, 16 act on the valve member so that the latter moves to throttle one of the ports 5, 6 should the flow through the corresponding outlet tend to increase relative to that through the other outlet. The valve member may be moved to isolate the outlet 6A and place the outlet 5A in unrestricted communication with the inlet by operation of a servopiston 17 to connect a vent 23 through ports 21 with the chamber to the right of the valve member so that the latter moves to the right until its left-hand end clears the portion of the bore 2 between the port 5 and an inlet chamber 3. The valve member is returned mechanically by the hollow piston rod 18 towards its central position when it is required to resume its flow dividing function. The mechanical operation may be dispensed with if a caged spring is provided to return the valve member towards its central position on closure of the vent valve constituted by the ports 21. A vent valve arrangement may also be provided at the left-hand end of the valve so that liquid may be delivered to either outlet individually. In a further modification, the valve member is operated mechanically in both directions through a lost-motion connection with the servopiston rod.
