Abstract

A germicidal composition containing petroleum jelly as principal constituent includes a non ionic emulsifier and a germicide both of which are soluble in water and in petroleum jelly. The emulsifier may be a partial ester of a polyoxyethylene ether or a polyoxyethylene ether of a partial ester or a polyether alcohol of the general formula R-(OCn H2n)xOH where R is an aryl, aralkyl, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group having 10-20 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 2 to 6 and x is an integer from 2 to 20. Suitable germicides which should have a phenol coefficient of at least 50 are:-quaternary ammonium halides, an alkylhalophenol or a hydroxy halogeno diphenyl alkane and a solubilising agent such as higher aliphatic alcohols and glycols and mixtures of these may be included. The preferred composition ranges from 65% to 90% petroleum jelly, 1% to 10% emulsifier and 0,1% to 3% germicide and is formed by adding the additives to the molten petroleum jelly. The preferred emulsifiers are formed by reaction of acids such as myristic, stearic, palmitic, lauric and oleic with polyhydroxy compounds such as polyglycols, glycerol, polyglycerols, erythritol, pentaerythritol, the hexitans and hexitols and many examples of these emulsifiers are given. The preferred germicides are the quaternary ammonium halide compounds of the general formula <FORM:0885959/V/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrophobic alkyl, unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl, or aliphaticaryl radicals of which at least one has 6 to 26 carbon atoms and the remaining radical is a hydrophylic acid element.ALSO:A germicidal composition containing petroleum jelly as principal constituent includes a non-ionic emulsifier and a germicide both of which are soluble in water and in petroleum jelly. The emulsifier may be a partial ester of a polyoxyethylene ether or polyoxyethylene ether of a partial ester or a polyether alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0885959/VI/1> where R is an aryl, aralkyl, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group having 10-20 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 2 to 6 and x is an integer from 2 to 20.
