The invention comprises compounds of formula where R 1 and R 2 represent a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, alicyclic. aromatic, arylaliphatic or heterocyclic residue, X and Y represent identical or different radicals forming ethers and/or esters of the diol, and Z is a divalent radical, and X and Y represent alkyl, alicyclic, aromatic, or arylaliphatic radicals which may be substituted, when ethers are formed, and acyl radicals when esters are formed and Y may also represent hydrogen. The acyl radicals may be derived from acetic, propionic, butyric or isobutyric acids, from a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid e.g. acrylic, chloroacrylic, methacrylic, chloroacetic. aromatic acids or cyclohexene-carboxylic acid, and examples of ethers wherein X and Y are alkyl, alicyclic, aromatic or arylaliphatic radicals, are mono- and di-alkyl, vinyl, allyl, cyanoethyl, glycidyl and polyethers. In compounds of Formula II the divalent Z radical may be a methyl radical which may be substituted; a cycloalkyl and cycloalkenylidenic radical or a derivative of an inorganic at least divalent such as carbonic, sulphurous, sulphuric, phosphoric or boric acids and compounds are listed. The compounds are prepared from diols which are then pyrolized. Examples describe the preparation of methylene-2 bis(cyano-2- ethoxy)-1-3-propane; methylene-2-diallyloxy- 1 - 3 - propane; diglycidyloxy - 1 - 3 - methylene - 2 - propane; the diacetate, the dipropionate, and the dimethacrylate of methylene- 2 - propanediol - 1 - 3; methylene - 5 - oxo - 2- metadioxan; methylene - 5 - metadioxan; methylene - 5 - vinyl - 2 - metadioxan; methylene - 5 - phenyl - 2 - metadioxan; and diphenoxy - 1 - 3 - methylene - 2 - propane.
