Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain magnesium hydroxide resistant to water and carbonation and useful as a polymer additive, by treating magnesium hydroxide with an alkyl phosphate and a fatty acid glyceride and/or phosphatide. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. of magnesium hydroxide is treated with (A) an alkyl phosphate of formula I or formula II (R is alkyl; n is 1, 2 or 3), (B) a fatty acid glyceride (e.g. linoleic acid glyceride or oleic acid glyceride) and/or (C) a phosphatide (e.g. lecithin or cephalin). The amounts (pts.wt.), of the components A, B and C are selected to satisfy the formulas 0.05<=A+B+C<=10, 0<=B<10, 0<=C<10, 0<A<10 and 0<B+C<10.
