In a water supply system in which water is pumped into a tank 10 and retained therein under air pressure until drawn off from the tank, the tank is provided with means for regulating the pressure of the air above the water in the tank. The means comprise a housing 30 secured in the side of the tank, a bore 32 extending through the housing being closed off by a flexible diaphragm 57 through which passes and in which is pivotally secured the float arm 56 of a ball float 55. The arm controls two opposed spring-biased valves 37, 46 in the housing. The valve 47 allows venting of the tank to atmosphere when the air pressure in the tank becomes excessive and unduly restricts the rise of water in the tank. The valve 37 allows entry of air into a pipe 41 when the level of the water in the tank rises unnecessarily far due to insufficient air being present in the tank, the air passing the valve 37, pipe 41, and non- return valve 45 into the supply pipe 13 from the pump 20 to the tank 10 as the supply pipe 13 on the ending of a pumping operation is always drained back into the well through a bleed passage in a non-return valve at the pump outlet. On the pump being subsequently started up by a pressure-responsive switch 25 in the tank the air in the pipe 13 passes through a non-return valve 22 and enters the tank.
