Abstract

To pump water from deep wells, especially remote from electricity supply, a tank or reservoir is placed at the bottom of the well about 10 cm below the level of the water and is connected by a first pipe to an air compressor on the surface. The tank is fitted with a first non- return valve which allows the surrounding water to flow in. A second non-return valve which allows the water to flow out of the tank is connected to a second pipe leading to the surface. When compressed air is supplied from the compressor the water is forced upwards through the second pipe. The air supply is cut off and the air pressure in the tank falls, allowing water to flow in through the first non-return valve ready for the next cycle.
