Abstract

885,762. Proofing mineral materials against liquids and gases. PEUTE-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. March 30, 1960 [Nov. 5, 1959], No. 11283/60. Class 140. [Also in Group XXI] Permeable mineral materials, e.g. building materials or petroleum bore holes, are rendered impermeable to liquids and gases by treatment with a liquid mixture of reactants which yield a cross-linked polymer thereby sealing the interstices. The mixture may be sulphuryl chloride with an unsaturated fatty oil or a butadiene or butadiene-acrylic polymer. Such mixtures may contain about 10% based on the total mixture of an inhibitor such as magnesium oxide, a mineral oil to reduce the viscosity, up to 10% of a silicone oil or resin, a swelling or foaming agent such as sodium bicarbonate or inorganic fillers such as chalk, talc, felspar or iron oxide. Acid soluble solids may be added and then leached out to render the sealing porous, e.g. magnesium oxide, lime or chalk. Another mixture is one yielding a cross-linked product containing -NH-CO-O- linkages and comprising a polyhydroxy compound containing at least three hydroxyl groups and a polyisocyanate. The polyhydroxy compound may be castor oil, the product of esterifying dicarboxylic acids with di- or tri-hydric alcohols containing at least three free hydroxyl groups e.g. the reaction product of adipic acid and glycol or glycerol, or a polyalcohol such as hexanetriol. The polyisocyanate may be toluidine di-isocyanate. A preferred mixture is of 1 gram molecule of castor oil with more than 2 gram molecules of toluidine diisocyanate which remains liquid for long periods, cross-linking being effected by adding further castor oil prior to use. Plasticisers and solvents may be added. Suitable plasticisers are phosphate, phthalate or adipinate esters, or butadiene-acrylonitrile polymers. The solvent may be a high aromatic mineral oil extract, a distilled fatty acid such as tall oil or a coal tar oil.
