A cut-off machine, as employed for cutting required pieces from metal billets and so forth, has a rotable disc cutter and means supporting the cutter with respect to a stationary worktable for horizontal swinging movement about the worktable and for both sliding and tilting movements in any selected vertical plane, whereby the cutter can be brought instantly to cut at different angles in said plane and to make relatively long cuts through deep sections without necessitating the use of a cutter of unduly large diameter. A. base plate 1 has an upstanding shaft 2 supporting a worktable 3. A frame 5 has at one end a bearing 4 through which the shaft 2 passes, the other end of the frame 5 resting on an arcuate track 6 of the base plate 1. The frame 5 has an upstanding bifurcated part 7 affording horizontally aligned bearings 8 in which are mounted, with interposed ball bearings, trunnions projecting from an open-ended rocker box 11. Slidable. between upper and lower rollers 12 rotably supported in the box 11 is a beam 13 carrying at its front end a rotable abrasive wheel 14. The beam 13 has a hand grip 15. The wheel 14 is driven, through Vee belts, by an electric motor 16 attached to the rear end of the beam and controlled by switches on the beam near the hand grip 15. For hydraulically or pneumatically sliding the beam 13 in the rocker box a cylinder 20 carried by the box has a plunger 21 exerting a thrust on a bracket 22 rigid with the beam, a pump and reservoir for feeding this device being located in the frame 5. An adjustable abutment 23 on the beam coacts with a return-valve 24 on the frame so as to limit the sliding feed stroke of the beam through the rocker box. Electric means may be provided for sliding the beam. The pivotal movement of the beam may be effected hydraulically or electrically.
