Abstract
The ammonium salt of an organic carboxylic acid or of an ester of a di- or polycarboxylic acid containing at least one free carboxyl group is made by reacting the acid or ester in solution in dimethylformamide with ammonia, preferably by passing the stoichiometric amount of gas into the solution, and separating the ammonium salt. Suitable acids are aliphatic mono-and dicarboxylic acids, such as myristic or adipic acid, or aromatic carboxylic acids, such as benzoic, o-phthalic, terephthalic, isophthalic and trimesic acid. Suitable esters include the hemi-esters of adipic and phthalic acids and mono- and diesters of trimesic acid. The process may be effected batchwise or continuously.
