885,569. Measuring short time intervals. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 29723/59. Class 37. The " operate " and " release " lays of an e.m. relay are displayed on the C.R.T. by providing two sinusoidal signals 90 degrees out of phase from SG to produce a circular trace, a further signal being provided from SG to an adjustable squaring circuit SC and a phase splitter PS, the output of which drives current through the coil in opposite directions as the signal changes polarity, the arrangement being such that when contact TRI is closed on either side the trace is visible, but when it is in transit the trace is suppressed by means of a brightening circuit BC connected to earth by contact TRI, a monostable circuit MS controlled by one of the phase-splitter outputs applying a short brightening pulse on each current reversal to produce a bright spot on the trace which therefore shows the relation between the current change in the relay coil and the relay response. This applies to a " break " contact set, when a " male " set is tested, the C.R.T. trace is suppressed while the moving spring is in contact with the stationary spring.
