885,533. Degassing molten metals; refining light alloys. FOUNDRY SERVICES INTERNATIONAL Ltd. April 25, 1960 [May 1, 1959] No. 15002/59. Classes 72 and 82(1). Light metals or alloys of the group magnesium, aluminium, alloys of these two, and alloys of either or both of these metals with other metals where Mg + A1 is the predominant constituent, are degassed (particularly occluded hydrogen) by flushing through the molten metal carbon monoxide and/or carbon dioxide generated in situ by adding to the molten metal a composition containing a mixture of carbonaceous material (e.g. finely divided graphite or carbon black) and an oxidising agent, such as the nitrate, peroxide, persulphate, chlorate or phosphate of alkali or alkaline earth metals; generally at least 5% by weight of the composition will be these ingredients. The additive composition may be in the form of powder, granules, in packets or aluminium containers or as tablets, and may include up to 20% by weight of a fully chlorinated hydrocarbon (e.g. C 2 Cl 6 ), with or without a diluent such as NaCl, CaF 2 , dolomite marble, zircon, grog or mixtures thereof, and grain refining agents or hardeners such as salts of titanium and/or boron.
