Abstract
885,409. Rocket motors and propellant charges therefor. HEXCEL PRODUCTS Inc. Feb. 6, 1959 [April 14, 1958], No. 4285/59. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). propellant charge for a rocket motor is of honeycomb structure, the cells being filled with a solid fuel containing an oxidant to sustain combustion of the honeycomb, which honeycomb provides reinforcement for the charge both longitudinally and transversely thereof. The cellular structure may be made from foils of metal such as aluminium, magnesium or lithium or alloys of aluminium, magnesium, lithium, beryllium or boron. Organic sheet material such as polyethylene, polyurethane, polypropylene or synthetic rubber may also be used for the structure and powdered lithium, aluminium, boron, magnesium or sodium may be embedded in these materials. If the cell walls are made of polyethylene or synthetic rubber, the cells may be packed with oxidisers such as ammonium nitrate or sodium, potassium, lithium or ammonium perchlorate. With cell walls of aluminium, lithium perchlorate may be used as an oxidiser and polyethylene may be used as additional fuel. In Fig. 1 the rocket motor 2 has a cylindrical casing closed at the forward end by a hemispherical plate 2a to which is secured the nose 4, which may house a warhead, instruments or other cargo 5. At the rear, the nozzle 3 is closed by a plug forming part of an electric squib 6 with an ignition charge 7. The propellant 10 arranged to burn progressively from the rear is made up of hexagonal section cells open at each end and extending longitudinally of the casing. The propellant may be in two or more coaxial parts with the cells extending radially from an axial passage 26, Fig. 6. The inner sleeve 28 has smaller cells than the outer sleeve 10 and a perforated layer 29, e.g. of metal, separates the two sleeves but may be rigidly bonded to them. The outer sleeve is bonded to the rocket casing 2. The inner sur- 'face of sleeve 28 may be covered with ignition material such as paper impregnated with sodium nitrate or cellulose nitrate film. The propellant may be arranged to burn simultaneously along the outer surface and the inner surface, which is formed by an axial passage which may be of star-shaped section.
