A machine for banding packages has two gear wheels 16, 17, Fig. 4, that can be closed on the banding means 5 and driven through a slipping clutch to tension the band, the teeth of the gear wheels being reduced in height over that part of their length that is to be occupied by the band to minimize the formation of weak zones in the band. The teeth 45, of the wheel 16, have recesses 46 in their effective flanks such that the sharp edge of the crest of the recessed portion of each tooth is spaced from the teeth 44 of the gear wheel 17. In Fig. 1 the band 5 is fed from a roll 6 to feed rolls 8 and 9, and then around guide members 3, 4, to encircle a package k. The free end of the band is then gripped and an arm 11 is rocked clockwise about its pivot 11a to disengage the feed rolls 8 and 9 from, and to close the gear wheels 16, 17 on, the band 5. The gear wheels 16, 17, driven through the friction clutch then tension the band until the clutch starts to slip. A cam controlled fastening mechanism 42 then punches through the overlapping portions of the tensioned band to form interlocking tongues. The gearing includes means whereby the gear wheels 16, 17 are then moved closer together and the drive thereto is rigidly coupled to the driving shaft 18 instead of through the slipping clutch. The tension in the band 5 then increases until it breaks immediately behind the sealing zone.
