Abstract
885,196. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. July 19, 1960 [Sept. 17, 1959], No. 25111/60. Class 103 (1). In an internal expanding drum brake having two shoes 3, 4, one end of each shoe bears against a separating member 5 and the other end against a common hollow anchor pin 11 secured to a support e.g. steering knuckle 24 by fastening means, such as a bolt 13, passing through the hollow portion, and an anchor plate, Fig. 5, 20 is supported on the anchor pin 11 and is connected to the shoe upper ends by springs 18 and 19. The anchor pin 11 is a force fit in a backing plate 1; the bolt 13 is locked by a washer 15 held by a tab 16 on actuating cylinder 17 which is secured by a tangentially extending flange 21 with a hole through which passes the anchor pin 11, and has a protuberance 23 extending through the backing plate 1 to prevent rotation. The separating member 5 comprises an adjustable strut against which the lower ends of the shoes 3, 4 are caused to bear by an interconnecting coil spring 6. In a modification, the actuating cylinder is mounted by means of a bolt on the backing plate independently of the anchor pin. An alternative method of securing the anchor pin to the backing plate by forcing a portion of the latter into an annular groove in the former is also described.
