Abstract

885,191. Carrying cables through partitions. VEROLME UNITED SHIPYARDS N.V. Nov. 9, 1959, No. 37917/59. Class 36. Cables 10K, 11K are carried through a bulkhead in a water-tight and gas-tight fashion by means of a device comprising a pot 1 the bottom 2 of which has an ample aperture 4 for the cables and the cover 3 being likewise apertured 5. Within the pot adjacent the bottom and the cover are sealing plates 6 and 7 of incombustible, heat-insulating material, apertured to fit the cables closely and dimensioned to fit closely within the pot. These plates are preferably in two halves for ease of assembly and, together with pliable, non-hardening, heatinsulating, flame-quenching and resilient sealing compound 8 they seal the cables within the pot. The plates 6 and 7 and the cover 3 are all free to slide axially along the cables so that the assembly is self-adjusting to changes in external or internal pressure due to e.g. flooding on one side of the bulkhead or partial loss of compound by fire. A suitable compound consists of petroleum jelly, fatty acids, and Paris White. The sealing plates may be of asbestos cement.
