Abstract

884,986. Two-part couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. June 17, 1960 [Aug. 6, 1959], No. 21393/60. Class 38 (1). A pin-bearing part of a connector for flattened or ribbon-type cable comprises an epoxy resin plate 16 reinforced with glass fibres and having integral pins 17, each provided with a thin metal layer 19 extending along one broad surface. The metal is applied to the pins by electroplating and spots of solder 20 are applied. The end of a tape cable 10 is slit 31 between successive conductors and the plate 16 threaded through the slits so that it lies above alternate conductors and below the other conductors. The conductors are then soldered to the respective pins by applying a soldering iron to the cable insulation above a solder spot 20, the plastic insulation melting locally from the conductor and exposing it for adherence to the solder. The projecting forward end of the tape is cut-off along line 32 and the assembly telescoped within a rubber-like insert 21 which is itself inserted in a metal shell 25. The socketbearing part of the conductor comprises an insulating plate member 34 formed with a plurality of forwardly-sloping parallel grooves 37 of which successive ones lie on opposite sides of the plate. The bottoms of each groove have thin strips of metal 39 secured by adhesive and, after the conductors of the cable 10<SP>1</SP> have been soldered to the metal strips, the rear portion of the plate member 34 is mounted in an insert 35 within a shell 41. The cable insert and shell of the pin and socket parts may be secured by adhesive. Upon initial engagement of the connector parts, alternate pins are bent in opposite directions and engage in the corresponding grooves 37. The parts are held together by bolts, and sealing results from the engagement of flanges 24, 42 and from pressure of the rear slanting portions of the metal shells 25, 41 with the rubber inserts 21, 35 which grip the cables. Additionally, the plate member 22 may snugly engage the interior of the insert 21. Keying means between the parts of the connector may be provided to prevent incorrect assembly. A modification comprises connector parts having two rows of contact pins and grooves for use with two divided tape cables. A radio shielding metallic layer, e.g. a foil, is formed on the cable and is connected to the connector shell. A further modification having three rows of pins and grooves is adapted for a cable having three superimposed cable portions.
