Abstract

Food for animals contains arabitol, preferably D-arabitol, as a sweetening agent. Specifications 822,153, 822,154 and 870,622 are referred to.ALSO:Edible formulations, particularly suitable for persons suffering from diabetes mellitus or obesity, contain arabitol, preferably D-arabitol, as a sweetening agent. Breads and certain types of drinks may contain as little as 0.5% by weight of arabitol, whereas 70% may be employed in jams and preserves. Other foods specified are biscuits, cakes, pastries and other confectionery, sweetmeats, chocolates, jams and other preserves, tinned fruit, portable liquids such as sweetened drinks, including low calorific alcoholic beverages. An example relates to jams containing 70 and 60% respectively of D-arabitol, 0.8% pectin, and 16% sorbitol or 12% glycerol as a humectant. Specifications 822,153, 822,154 and 870,622 are referred to.
