Abstract

884,942. Polishing. BELL INTERCONTINENTAL CORPORATION. April 23, 1959 [Feb. 17, 1959], No. 13900/59. Class 60. A method of polishing a surface, e.g. of metal, comprises throwing pellets of a resilient material on to the surface with a positive spinning and linear movement and simultaneously supplying a polishing agent to the surface. Pellets 10, Fig. 1, are projected on to the workpiece 12 by a bladed wheel 16. The blades may be straight or curved and may be flat or may be grooved longitudinally to increase the spin imparted to the pellets. In a modification, Fig. 3, pellets 10 from a hopper 52 pass between a rotating cylinder 40 and a stationary member 48; one or both of these may be grooved. The pellets may be of natural or synthetic rubbers and elastometers, polyethylene, polybutylene, polyamide, polyester, cellulose acetatebutyrate, nitrocellulose polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and the like. The material should have a modulus of elasticity less than 400,000 p.s.i., and pellets of different modulus may be used in different stages of polishing. The pellets may be cut or moulded to cubical, cylindrical or other polygond shape but are preferably spherical. They may have a heavy core, e.g. of lead. The polishing agent, e.g. magnesium oxide, alumina, tripoli, rouge or Novaculite, may be incorporated in the pellets or applied thereto as a coating. The pellets may pick up the agent as they travel to the work. The agent may be applied direct to the work. Specification 722,399 is referred to.
