Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the drawback concomitant with such cleaning and leader tapes as are attached for use to the leading and trailing ends of a magnetic tape by dispersing special particles in the vicinity of the surface of a tape base without use of any binder.
CONSTITUTION: A base 11 made of polyethylene terephthalate or the like has its one surface roughened by a known method to be formed with a number of convex and concave portions 12 and 13 and its other surface lightly roughened with the charged particles 15 in the base. The particles 14 having a Mohs' scale of hardness higher than 5 (or preferably 5.5), size distribution of 0.08 to 8 (preferably 0.4 to 6) microns and a mean diameter smaller than 6 microns are distributed one to 10 per 100 square microns on the surface. The charging operations of the particles 14 are carried out by the blowing method of the suspension of the particles, the direct blowing method of the particles, or the thermal bonding method of the particles.
