Abstract

Tumbling pellets comprise abrasive material dispersed throughout and embedded in a matrix of plastic material. The abrasive may be alumina, silica, kyanite, silicon carbide or multite. The plastic is preferably a thermoplastic. Equal volumes of high impact polystyrene powder and No. 16 silicon carbide grit are mixed and hot extruded to form a 1/2 inch diameter rod which is cut into 1/2 inch lengths to form the pellets. Alternativel the plastic may be polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral or polyvinyl acetate.ALSO:Tumbling pellets comprise abrasive material disposed throughout and embedded in a matrix of plastic material; articles in which pellets have become lodged during tumbling are subjected to a liquid bath treatment, the liquid being such that it does not attack the abrasive or the article but is a solvent for the plastic, whereby the size of the pellets is reduced so facilitating their dislodgment. The abrasive may be alumina, silica, kyanite, silicon carbide or multite. The plastic is preferably thermoplastic. Equal volumes of high impact polystyrene powder and No. 16 silicon carbide grit are mixed and hot extruded to form pellets. Alternatively the plastic may be polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate or methyl cellulose. For all the foregoing the solvent may be ketone. Polyvinyl butyral or polyvinyl acetate may be used as the plastic, the solvent being an alcohol or ester.
