Abstract

884,937. Barrel locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 11, 1960 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 6286/59. Class 44. In a lock of the kind comprising a body part 8 in which is formed a cylindrical bore having a plurality of parallel and blind holes 11 extending radially therefrom, a cylindrical plug 9 in the bore, the plug being adapted to receive a key and having a plurality of radially extending holes which at one angular setting of the plug relative to the body part are aligned with the holes in the latter, a plurality of spring loaded pins in the holes in the body part respectively and a plurality of plungers in the holes in the plug respectively, the arrangement being such that when an appropriate key is inserted in the plug the plungers are moved radially to a position in which their outer ends are flush with the periphery of the plug and then prevent the pins from entering the holes in the plug, the bore of the body part is formed at a position diametrically opposite the blind holes with a longitudinally extending groove in which is accommodated a complementarily shaped strip 13 serving to close the inner ends of the holes 14 in the body part through which the blind holes are formed. As shown the plug 9 is retained within the bore by means of a spring clip 15 engaging a circumferential groove at the inner end of the plug. In this construction the strip 13 is inserted into the groove from the rear end of the body part after the plug 9 has been inserted in the bore and the spring clip when placed in position prevents longitudinal movement of the strip 13 rearwardly, longitudinal movement forwardly being prevented by a head 9a on the forward end of the plug 9. The strip is of rectangular cross-section and the groove is complementarily shaped; in a modification the groove is of dovetail crosssection with a correspondingly shaped strip. Instead of preventing longitudinal movement of the strip as described above by the provision of the clip 15, dimples or other projections are pressed from the strip or the ends of the strip are formed with integral projections which are bent at right angles. The projections engage some of the holes through which the blind bores are drilled. In a further modification the groove does not extend to the rear end of the body part and the strip 13 is held from longitudinal movement rearwardly by the end of the groove. The strip may be made of a plastic material such as nylon.
