Abstract

884,896. Utilisation of scrap polystyrene foam. KOPPERS CO. Inc. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 27, 1958], No. 43243/59. Class 87(2). Polystyrene foam scraps, comminuted if necessary, are placed under mechanical pressure in a press provided with means for the escape of air, and steam at a pressure of between 1 and 10 atmos., preferably 4 to 5 atmos., is introduced into the press until the polystyrene foam tightly closes the means for escape of air and the pressure in the press has increased to between 0À5 and 1À2 atmos., preferably about 0À7 atmos., above atmospheric, the supply of steam then being interrupted and the material allowed to cool. An example of a suitable press is illustrated in Fig. 2 and has two covers, 2 and 3, constructed as steam chests, the lower of which is urged towards the upper by a plunger 9 after the press has been filled with scraps. Part of the air contained in the press escapes through holes 8 provided in the side walls, these holes being arranged at such a level that, when the press is closed, they are located opposite the centre of the cavity of the press. Steam is then introduced through the pipe lines 4 into the two steam chests, displacing the air still in the press and then flowing out of the press through the holes 8 until the polystyrene foam has been heated sufficiently for all the holes and any other places which do not fit in an air-tight manner to be sealed completely. By means of shut-off devices (not shown) the supply of steam is cut off when the desired pressure (e.g. 0À7 atmos.) is reached. The reduction in the volume of the press cavity is preferably about 50%. Where slabs of less than 30 cm. thickness are required, it is sufficient to supply the steam through the lower cover 3 in which case a simple cover 10 is located at the top, Fig. 4. The holes 8 are then located at the uppermost end of the side walls or else are provided in the cover 10. In certain circumstances, the joint between the cover 10 and the side walls is sufficient for the discharge of air and steam so that the escape holes 8 are unnecessary.
