884,852. Making mouthpiece cigarettes. MOLINS, D. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [June 28, 1957], No. 20493/57. Class 130. The leading cigarette C<SP>1</SP> of a group of two cigarettes C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> and a stub S arranged end to end on a conveyer band 1, is retarded for a predetermined period by a suction device 11 to cause the cigarettes and stubs to be abutted by a pusher 7 engaging cigarette C<SP>2</SP>. The stubs are inserted into spaces between the cigarettes by a stub-feeding means as described in Specification 814,386, and the rearmost cigarette is engaged by lugs 7 on an endless chain 4 to cause abutment of the cigarettes and stub. The suction chamber 11 is connected intermittently to a suction pipe 19 by a carbon valve disc 20 secured to a metal disc 25 keyed to a rotary shaft 10, the operation of the chamber 11 being timed in relation to the stub feeding means so that the leading cigarette C<SP>1</SP> of each group is lifted off the conveyer 1 and arrested while the components are abutted by the lug 7 which slides the cigarette C<SP>1</SP> along the face of suction chamber 11, the suction being then cut off to allow the group of closelyabutted components to be carried by the conveyer to a device for applying uniting bands. If the cigarette supply is cut off temporarily, the suction chamber 11 does not arrest the flow of stubs S which pass on to the uniting band applying machine to dispose of the uniting bands.
