Abstract
A silica-magnesia cracking catalyst is prepared by incorporating magnesia and a crystalline clay mineral with a synthetic hydrogel (e.g. silica or silica-alumina hydrogel). The amount of magnesia is 4-30 % wt. of the dry hydrogel and the clay constitutes 20-90 % wt. of the finished catalyst. The clay may consist of relatively fine or coarse particles; a kaolinite (e.g. kaolin, nacrite or dickite) or halloysite is preferred, but montmorillonites, (e.g. beldellite, nontronite, hectorite and saponite), bentonite, illites and fuller's earth types (e.g. attapulgite, sepalite and polygorskite) are also mentioned. The surface area and pore size of specific catalysts are mentioned.
