A magnetic drum-and-sheet recorder uses a stiff, double-sided record 1, which is loaded through a slot 98 in the machine casing into a groove 5 and wrapped by rollers 6, 7 and 8 to present one or other face to a record/playback head 49 according to the direction of rotation of the drum 4, the resilience of the record being such that a first reverse revolution of the drum ejects the trailing edge of the record through the slot 98 and a second revolution re-wraps the record ready for further use. A worm 56 is driven at the same speed as the drum and a second worm 72 through friction means at a higher rate in the opposite direction (Fig. 2, not shown). A normally engaged detent 75 locks the worm 72 so that a worm-wheel 63 drives the carriage 52 carrying the head 49. A solenoid 78 allows differential driving of the worm-wheel 63 to provide back-spacing in either direction. Contacts 88, 91 actuated at either end of the carriage travel and a contact 45 actuated by frictional drive from the dum 4 co-operate to energize a solenoid 20 by which a pin 17 stops the drum in the position shown, after which it is reversed. A contact 47 gives an intermittent warning signal during the reversing process. A record slip may be marked in either of two places (Fig. 4, not shown) according to the record face in use.
