Abstract

1427411 Automatic control of magnetic tape drive ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1973 [24 April 1972(2)] 19139/73 Heading G3R A deck for use with a tape cassette having supply and take-up rolls includes motors for driving each roll and a capstan. The rotational speed of the capstan is sensed and regulated, and the power required by the capstan motor is also measured and used to control the energization of the roll motors so as to control the tape tension. As shown, a tape deck has toothed drive members 20, 21 for engaging tape rolls in a cassette. Guide rollers (54) in the cassette, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), constrain a tape to engage transducers 45, 48 and form a partial loop around a capstan 35 driven by a D.C. motor 38 which also drives a tachogenerator 40 forming part of a speed regulating loop including a control unit 80. The current required by the motor 38 is also sensed by unit 80, and corresponding control signals are fed to motors 28, 30 driving members 20, 21 in order to ensure that the take-up roll is driven hard enough and the supply roll is retarded sufficiently to maintain the tape in frictional contact with the capstan 35 and minimise the current in motor 38 by equalizing the tape tension on each side of the capstan.
