Abstract

974,513. Auto-loading tape-recorders. I.I.T. RESEARCH INSTITUTE. June 28, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 23428/61. Heading G5R. An improvement of the apparatus of Specification 901,644 uses the same form of feed-spool, Fig. 2, in which a leader, Fig. 5 of flexible but somewhat springy material is snapped under reel recesses 14,15 when fully wound, but uses an overwidth leader to obviate the need for a hook-connecting leader attached to the take-up spool. The spool, magazine or handloaded, is rotated anti-clockwise by rim-drive means 180, as claimed in divisional Specification 974,514, and the tip 16b of the leader snapped out by a stripper 61, fed into guides 53, further fed by synchronously driven rollers 56, 57 and either picked up by a take-up spool with a toothed hub, Fig. 4 or hand-linked to a modified spool (Fig. 6 not shown). The plain part of the leader, 16d forms a bed (137, Fig. 4) for the following tape 17. In either form of loading, a gear 111, rotates one revolution during the threading action and a cam 114 then disengages the threading members and a normal capstan drive 33, 36 and take-up drive are engaged. An inner tape-foil 232, Fig. 2, engages either a transducing drive in the reverse direction (Fig. 8, not shown) or a fast rewind of the tape. A stripper member (Fig. 9 not shown) for using spools of the Fig. 2 type on a hand-threaded machine is also detailed.
