Abstract
884,306. Welding by pressure. DARCHEM ENGINEERING Ltd. Aug. 7, 1959 [Aug. 13, 1958; May 1, 1959], Nos. 26003/58 and 14929/59. Class 83 (4). In a method of welding metals the union is effected by a combination of ultra-sonic vibrations and resistance heating. The current flow is restricted so that the metal reaches a plastic condition but does not melt so that a metallurgical solid state bond is produced at relatively low temperature and pressure. The apparatus comprises a frame 10 which carries a welding head 16, an anvil 13 and a control unit 15 (not shown). The head 16 which slides between guides 17 and has a counter-weight 24 comprises a transducer 20 to which is rigidly fixed a welding horn 21, and a casing 19 adapted to contain liquid coolant. The head is adjusted vertically by a screw 25 and interposed between the head and the screw is an hydraulic ram 27. The control unit contains a generator operating at, for example, 20-56 kc/s. and 0.05-2.0 kw. Detachably secured to the welding horn at 12 is a welding electrode 34 which has a part-spherical endface 35. Heating current is conveyed to the electrode by a ring 30 spring-loaded on to the horn 21. A cable 14 provides an electrical return path to the unit 15. In a modification for a portable device the electrode 12 comprises inner and outer parts insulated from one other and the heating current flows from one part to the other through the metal to be welded.
