Abstract

Lubricants comprise a hydrocarbon lubricating oil, a naphthenate of a Group II metal, e.g. Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba or Zn, having a basicity greater than 400 (defined below) and an alkylated bis-phenol, preferably an alkylated derivative of a bis-phenol of the formula: <FORM:0884164/III/1> in which x stands for -S-, -S-S-, -Se-, -S-CH2-, -CH2-S-CH2-, -CHR-, -CR2-, -(CH2)n-, -NH- or O and R is methyl or ethyl and n is 1, 2 or 3. The oil may be paraffinic or naphthenic and may contain aromatics and belong to any suitable viscosity class. It may be mixed with or replaced by polyisobutylene and lard oil may be added. The basicity of the naphthenate is defined as <FORM:0884164/III/2> X 100 in which M is the number of metal equivalents and E the number of combined naphthenic acid equivalents in a given quantity and may be up to 800. The acid preferably has a molecular weight of 150-750, and the basic naphthenate is used in an amount of 0,2-10% by weight of the oil. The bis-phenols may contain 1-8 alkyl groups each of 1-10 carbon atoms, the two rings being the same or different; many are specified. The bis-phenol may be present in an amount of 0,1-5% by weight of the oil and 5-500% by weight based on naphthenate. Optional additives are anti-scuffing agents (phosphorus esters); anti-foaming agents (silicone polymers); detergents (alkaline earth metal alkyl salicylates); v.i. improvers (polymeric acrylic esters); extreme pressure additives (dibenzyl disulphide); rust inhibitors (condensation product of maleic anhydride and long chain olefins); oiliness agents (acidless tallow); and surface active agents (peroxidized aromatic extracts).
