Abstract
An aqueous emulsion, for waterproofing textiles, &c., comprises at least one silicone and, as curing catalyst therefor, a condensed ester of orthotitanic acid and/or a condensed ester of orthozirconic acid, which is/are oil-soluble but substantially insoluble in water. Silicones specified are methyl-, methylphenyl-, methyl-hydrogen- and alkoxyalkyl-polysiloxane liquids or solvent-soluble resins. Condensed esters specified are those of stearyl-, 2-ethylhexyl, nonyl-, methylcyclohexyl-, and n-butyl-titanates and n-butyl, stearyl- and 2-ethylhexyl-zirconates. In making the emulsions, a surface-active agent, many examples of which are given, is preferably incorporated in an organic solvent solution of the condensed ester before emulsifying and adding to an aqueous silicone emulsion. Desirably the emulsions are stabilized by the addition of hydrolysis retarders, e.g. (1) metal alkoxides which do not hydrolyse, such as tetrastearyl-, hexylene-glycol-, lauryl- and octylene-titanates and tetraoleyl-, hexyleneglycol-, octylene-, triethanolamine-and nonylzirconates and titanium and zirconium caprate/caprylate, and (2) film-forming polymers such as epoxy resins, polybutylmethacrylate and the resin obtained by reaction of methylcyclohexanone with NaOH in the presence of methanol. Solvents specified are Stoddard solvent, white spirit, solvent naphtha, toluene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, di- and tri- and tetra-chlorethylene and chlorobenzene. The emulsions may be used in conjunction with conventional textile treating compositions, e.g. urea/and melamine/formaldehyde condensates, wax dispersions, dispersions of fatty condensation products and hydrolysable Al and Zn salts such as acetates and chlorides. Examples are given. A condensed acylate of the formula <FORM:0884141/IV (a)/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl group, R2 is an alkyl group, i.e. -OCOR2 is a fatty acid residue, and n is an integer, is made by reacting a condensed alkoxide, e.g. condensed butyl titanate, with a fatty acid. Specifications 680,265 and 708,821 are referred to.ALSO:In Example (8), titanium caprate/caprylate, containing equal amounts of caprate and caprylate, i.e. a 50/50 caprate/caprylate, may be made by reacting tetrabutyl orthotitanate with capric and caprylic acids <FORM:0884141/IV (b)/1> where R is the nonyl/heptyl radical.
