Abstract
A stable composition comprises (1) an organic solvent solution of an organopolysiloxane resin; (2) an alkaline curing catalyst for (1) and (3) a stabilizer in amount of 0.001 to 1.0 per cent by weight of the siloxane, selected from acetic anhydride and formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, capric and palmitic acids, the alkaline catalyst being available for final curing of the resin, and the acid being removed only at the time the resin is cured. The siloxane resins specified have a R/Si ratio between 1.1 and 1.85, wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or halogenated aryl, and may also contain Si-bonded OH groups. Condensation catalysts specified are sodium, potassium and caesium hydroxides, alkali metal salts of silanediols and siloxanols, quaternary ammonium hydroxides and alkoxides, alkanolamines and phosphonium compounds. Curing of the siloxane and removal of the acid may be effected e.g. at temperatures from 125 DEG to 200 DEG C. In examples a toluene solution of a methyl phenyl siloxane resin containing as curing catalyst caustic soda, tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide or tetrabutyl phosphonium hydroxide, was stabilized by (1,4,5,6) acetic acid; (2) acetic acid or anhydride; (3) acetic, palmitic or butyric acid. Other solvents specified are xylene, benzene and trichloroethylene. Uses.-The compositions may be used for making insulated wires, imparting waterresistance to surfaces of electrical equipment and rendering masonry water-repellent.
