Abstract

883,889. Testing stacks of record cards. GIROTTI, E. May 5, 1960 [May 5, 1959], No. 16005/60. Class 106 (1). To check the operation of a record card sorting machine, the cards from each pocket are aligned in a stack and the presence of the same sorting perforation in all of them is verified optically. The invention provides apparatus for this purpose comprising a table 13 having an end flange 13<SP>1</SP> against which the cards are stacked, and a pair of uprights 6, 7 of which the latter has a vertical slot 9 to pass light from a lamp 10 through aligned perforations in the stack of cards. The table is movable to select the column and is locked by a rotatable tongue piece 15 engaging in slots 16 on the base 5. Light passing from lamp 10 through aligned perforations in the cards may be seen. by the operator when he brings his eye into alignment with the slot 8. To avoid this an adjustable prism or mirror may be provided which is positioned to cross the slot at the height. of the expected perforation and which directs the light to the operator in a more convenient manner. There may alternatively be a prism or mirror for each perforation position of the column. Alternatively, there may be a photo-cell to receive the light to indicate by electric signal that there are holes properly aligned in all the cards. There may be a spring- loaded switch bar on the end flange 13<SP>1</SP> against which it is necessary to press the stacked cards to illuminate the lamp 10. The table, in another form, is integral with the base and the uprights 6 and 7 slide together along grooves to register with the selected column of the cards.
