Abstract

959,621. Checking receipts; money delivering apparatus. UNIVERSAL MATCH CORPORATION. May 17,1962, No. 19037/62. Headings G4T and G4X. A cheque is cashed on presentation of the cheque and an identifying card to the machine. The cheque can only be for 10, 20 or 30 dollars and the required amount is selected by the customer by pressing an appropriate button. The identifying card 21 (Fig. 2) comprises a printed portion, 22 naming the customer, a punched tag 23 equivalent to the printed portion, an edge divided into sections 24 representing periods of time and corresponding spaces 26 for receiving a note of the amount drawn a period of time. The card and cheque are placed in compartments of a drawer 43 (Fig. 5) which is then moved by the customer to an intermediate position. There, the cheque compartment is sensed by a contact for presence of a cheque, and the tag 23 on the card is compared by photo-electric device 60 with tags 56A on a drum, which represent invalid cards. If there is coincidence in the left and right-hand sections of device 60, showing that a tag on the drum is identical with that on the presented card, no further operation of the machine is possible. Similarly, if no cheque is sensed, the machine is disabled. The drawer is then released so that it may be pushed fully home. The cheque is photographed or otherwise recorded, as by photoelectric scanning on to magnetic tape, and the cheque is dropped, by opening the hinged floor of its compartments into a receptacle 65. The section 24 of the card 21 is also checked for validity. Screwed on rails 72, 73 (Fig. 10) which run parallel to the sliding direction of drawer 43 is a device including a print wheel 83, a switch 86 with arm 87, and a cutter (not shown). The device is adjustable so that with the drawer fully closed the switch arm 87 bears on the card 21 at any required edge section 24. If the card is notched at this section switch 86 is operated as arm 87 is free to move and further operation of the machine is possible. If the card is not notched delivery is made of the required number of ten-doller bills by device 36, which comprises two tapes 33,34 enclosing the bills and wound on a drum. The tapes are unwound on to drums 54, ejecting the bills on to the drawer 43. The number of bills delivered is dependent on the button pressed by the customer. The card 21 is notched by the cutter, the amount of money delivered is printed in section 26 of the card, and the money photographed or otherwise recorded. The drawer may now be withdrawn by the customer. Instead of a check of the tag 23 on the card against tags 56A in the machine, the check may be made against a greater number of tags stored at some central station. The cheque and disbursed money may be recorded with the identification card.
