Abstract

An electrophotographic plate comprises a paper or metal support coated with a dispersion in a resinous binder of a photoconductive polynuclear organic compound containing at least two benzene rings connected by a single carbon-to-carbon bond and substituted by one or more similar or different substituents from the following:- a halogen atom, or a cyano, nitro, or acyl group. Examples of such compounds are 4, 411-dibromoterphenyl, 3, 4 dicyanodiphenyl, 4, 411 dicyanodiphenyl, 4, 411 dinitroterphenyl and 4, 411-dibenzoyl-terphenyl. Suitable binders and dye sensitizers are those used in the coatings described in Specification 883,782. An exemplary coating composition is described. Specification 633,849, 772,627, 775,812, 808,485, 811,165 and 818,068 also are referred to.ALSO:A supported layer for use as an electrophotographic plate (see Group XXXVI) comprises, dispersed in a resinous binder, a photo-conductive polynuclear organic compound containing at least two benzene rings connected by a single carbon-to-carbon bond and substituted by one or more similar or different substituents from the following; a halogen atom, or a cyano, nitro, or acyl group. Examples of such compounds are 4,411-dibromoterphenyl, 3,4-dicyanodiphenyl, 4, 411-dicyanodiphenyl, 4,511-dinitroterphenyl, and 4,411-dibenzoylterphenyl. Suitable binders and dye sensitizers are those used in the layers described in Specification 883,782. In an example 30 grams of 4,411-dibromoterphenyl are ball milled with 120 cc. of a 2% by weight solution of polyacrylonitrile in dimethylformamide and coated on a support.
