Abstract
883,780. Footwear. HARRISON, S. G. Feb. 19, 1960 [April 15, 1959], No. 5915/60. Class 17(2) A shoe structure comprises basic units interlocked together, these including a unitary moulded basic shell unit 26 having a full sole portion 28 and an upstanding counter portion 33, and a basic heel and shank unit 27 having a heel 44 with a top portion 45 and an elongated shank stiffening member 47. The shell unit 26 is of an elastic and flexible material such as synthetic rubber or polyvinyl chloride and comprises a heel bottom area 29, a forepart sole area 30 and an intervening shank area 31 merging with the forepart sole area 30 at a ball-supporting area 32. An indented recess 38 extends from the vicinity of the back end of the heel bottom area 29 to the vicinity of the ball-supporting area 32 with at least the front edge 40 being undercut to provide a locking groove. The heel and shank unit 27, made from a relatively rigid material such as hard synthetic rubber, polystyrene or polymethylmethacrylate, is provided with an upstanding land 48, its top surface merging with that of the shank stiffening member 47 which has a tapered leading edge 52. The two units are interlocked and securely anchored, e.g. by heat sealing or cementing the opposed faces of the recess 38 and the heel and shank unit 27. In one embodiment the shell unit 26 has a fixing strip 34 extending from the counter portion 33 to the toe and a ramp toe cap 35 is attached to this strip by, e.g. heat sealing, cementing, stitching or nailing. If desired, the edge of the sole portion may be externally shaped in the forepart sole and intervening shank areas to simulate an outsole. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 14), the foxing strip 134 terminates in the vicinity of the ball-supporting area 132 and a forepart vamp 135 is provided in the form of a toe cap having a bottom wall 58. The forepart sole area is in the form of a flat platform having an integral land 56, circular or oval in outline, which interlocks with a hole or recess in the vamp bottom wall 58 and is anchored by any suitable means, e.g. by heat sealing or cementing. The heel 44 and shank stiffening member 47 may originally form a single part basic heel and shank unit 27 or be separately formed and then permanently attached together to form this unit.
