Abstract
Scrap material, particularly tin sheet waste coated with layers of lacquer. e.g. composed of polyvinyl chloride or epoxy resins, phenolresins, polyester or polystyrene oil or similar synthetic resins, is detinned by first thermally pretracting it only up to temperatures from 120 DEG to 350 DEG C., which preclude a rebuilding or new formation of tin-iron alloys, and then subjecting it to a detinning operation by application of aqueous alkalies, e.g. soda-lye, either by a chemical or an electrolytic process. The heat-treatment may be carried out, e.g. for 3 to 30 minutes, either by using hot air or inert gases, or by applying steam or super-heated water, wherein soda or potash lye, an amine, ammonia or a lacquer-dissolving solvent (e.g. higher boiling ketones such as cyclohexanone) are introduced, preferably at 120 DEG -250 DEG C. and under 8 atmospheres.
