Abstract

An isotope of an element or a compound containing such isotope is obtained from a mixture of molecules of isotopes of the element in molecular combined form with another element or a mixture of molecules of isotopes of the same element by subjecting the mixture to the action of a monochromatic radiation of a wavelength equal to that of the resonance peak of a molecule of the mixture, which molecule contains or consists of the desired isotope and recovering the desired isotope or a compound containing it. By this process irradiation of H2, H2O, HF, HCl, HBr, or Hl causes only the molecules containing D to be dissociated to yield nascent D. The D may be recovered as D2 or the corresponding D compound depending on the temperature and pressure applied. Alternatively, an element or compound, which has an affinity for D, may be added to the initial compound. The process can be repeated. The process is also applicable to the recovery of isotopes of Li, Be, or B.
