Abstract
883,458. Moulding articles having improved resistance to surface wear. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Werke A. G.). Aug. 5, 1960, No. 27283/60. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XIX] Articles, e.g. gauges, especially those for testing spline shafts, are moulded from materials such as thermoplastic compounds and cur able plastics which are liquid or viscous as they are processed anc which may later be solidified spherical metal bodies being in corporated in the liquid or viscous material so as to improve the resistance to surface wear of the moulded articles. Preferably these spherical bodies are hardened steel balls. In the embodiment illus trated in Fig. 1, a mould for a spline gauge comprises a master spline mandrel 1 of steel, which is hardened and ground accurately to size and provided with a thin coat of a parting agent, a sleeve 2, and a threaded cover 4 which is screwed in position when the space between the sleeve and mandrel has been filled with a mixture of thermosetting resin and steel balls. After the resin is cured, the mandrel 1 is removed, the sleeve 2 and cover 4 forming part of the finished gauge.
