Abstract

883,420. Selective punching - machines. KODAK CO. Feb. 11, 1958 [Feb. 11, 1957], No. 17201/61. Divided out of 883,419. Class 31 (2). Apparatus for perforating flexible discrete elements of a sheet-like nature, comprises a plurality of punches, movable control elements for determining which of the punches are to be rendered effective for perforating an element, a support for a discrete element to be perforated provided on a transport means movable in planes perpendicular to each other such that movement of the transport means in one of said planes will bring the element on the support into contact with the selected punch or punches which are thereby caused to make perforations in the discrete element, said selected punch or punches entering a corresponding die aperture or apertures provided in the support. The perforating machine is described as applied to the optical viewing apparatus described and claimed in Specification 883,419 for punching out holes corresponding to those images of an image bearing element which it is desired to reproduce. The machine comprises a holder 210 accommodating slides 214, each connected by a flexible cable 218 to a selector button (not shown). The slides 214 are movable across a fixed part 212 in which punches 217 can slide when overlain by a notch 219 in its associated slide 214. In use, the slides corresponding to those images which it is not desired to reproduce are moved by the cables 218, so that the notches on said slides overlie the associated punches 217. Thereupon a perforated plate 105 carrying the image bearing element is pressed by a rubber cap on the armature of a solenoid, which is momentarily energized when plate 105 is correctly positioned, against the punches so that those punches which are prevented from movement by the slides 214 perforate the image bearing element. A switch is also closed to energize a solenoid and so connect a vacuum pump to a recess in the perforated plate and remove the perforations to a drip jar. Slides 214 and punches 217 are re-set by a rotary solenoid 229 (Figs. 2 and 9, not shown), which rotates a cam into engagement with the ends of slides 214, this solenoid being energized when plate 105 is removed from the perforator.
