Abstract

883,155. Armoured cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 23, 1960, No. 6263/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. Plastic coated armouring wires of cables are joined, either during manufacture or laying of the cable, by e.g. brazing or welding, and the joint is covered by a plastic sleeve which has been treated in a volatile liquid to cause it to become pliable and capable of expansion so that it may be drawn over the coating of one of the lengths of wire and thence over the joined portion; the volatile liquid then being allowed to evaporate so that the sleeve contracts to engage the joined wires over the region of the join and to overlap the ends of the plastic coating on each side; a sealing material may be applied to the adjacent plastic edges. The plastic may be P.V.C., the volatile liquid being either tri-chlor-ethylene, carbon tetrachloride, benzene or a liquid homologue of one of these, and the sealing medium, if used, may be a vinyl cement.
