[Also in Groups XXIX, XXX and XXXVIII] A brush or bow 8 (Fig. 5), supported at the apex of a pantograph, is forced upwards against the overhead line by a spring contained in a casing 14 and the pressure between the brush or bow 8 and the overhead line is indicated by the inductance of a coil 24 attached to the casing 14 and having a movable iron core 28 attached to the brush or bow 8. The variable current from the coil 24 is fed to a commutator which automatically controls two electro-valves to raise or lower the brush or bow 8. In an alternative arrangement an electrical servo control, located at the hinged point of the pantograph arms beneath the brush or bow 8, controls the movements of motors to raise or lower the pantograph arms. In a further arrangement in which the brush or bow are subjected to frequent small amplitude, vertical fluctuations an integrating counter is provided before the commutator. The variation in spring tension may also be measured by a piezo-electric device or carbon, the resistance of which varies with the change or load.
