Abstract

882,796. Stamping; shearing; bending. AMP Inc. March 29, 1960 [April 13, 1959; May 19, 1959; Aug. 18, 1959], No. 11032/60. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXI] In a tool for operating on a workpiece positioned between a fixed die 26 and a movable die 28 the fixed die is carried on a frame 20 and the movable die 28 is connected to a ram 30 having a detonating pin 70, the ram 30 being driven by springs 64, Fig. 5 (not shown), down a breech 32 against a primer 10 to detonate an explosive charge 6 for forcing the die 28 on its working stroke. The charge 6 is located between a plug 8 containing the primer 10 and the closed end of a polyethylene cylinder 2 which is inserted in the breech 32 and which protects the breech against the explosive gases which remain sealed in the cylinder. The firing stroke of the ram 30 is triggered by depressing a spring-loaded safety pin 52 while simultaneously gripping a handle 22 to depress a lever 40 against a spring 48, the lever 40 pivoting about a pin 46 and releasing an arm 42 from a recess 50 in the spring-loaded moving dieblock. As an additional safety measure an arm 44 will not enter keyways 36, 38 unless the breech cap 34 is fully screwed on. The invention is applied to the crimping of an electrical connector C on a conductor W but is also applicable to cable cutting and other metal forming operations. In a modification, Fig. 10, the connector C and wire W are held prior to crimping against the die 26 by the hooked end 80 of a spring 78 which is tensioned by rotation of discs 72. The breech cap 34 is pivoted on a mounting ring 88 to which it is locked by a spring-loaded lever 84. The tool is triggered by drawing back a hollow rod 90 in the direction of the arrow against the tension of a spring 114 attached at one end to the inside of the hollow rod and at the other to a lever 100 pivoted on a pin 104. On engagement of a tab 116 attached to the rod 90 with a spring- loaded pivoted catch 102, the catch rotates about a pin 106 and disengages from a stop 110 on the die 28 releasing the latter so that the ram 30 is forced into the cartridge cylinder by the spring-loaded lever 100 to initiate firing. In another modification, Fig. 13, the ram 30 is made hollow to prevent a cushioning effect by the air in the cartridge cylinder on the firing stroke, the firing pin 70 being mounted in close contact with the primer on the end of a sleeve 117. The trigger mechanism is similar to that of the tool of Fig. 10 except that the rod 90 is replaced by a bar 118 pressed back against the spring 114 by a trigger 122. To fire the tool the trigger 122 is pulled downwards to clear the stop pin 130, and rotated to push back the bar 118, the ram 30 being operated as before. On release the trigger 122 automatically returns to the position of Fig. 13. A spring-loaded lever 142 operates a modified holder 132 for the wire W through a linkage, Fig. 12 (not shown). Specifications 872,626 and 873,192 are referred to.
