Abstract

882,639. Separating magnesium alloy from foundry residues; centrifugal separators. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd. July 22, 1960 [Sept. 9, 1959], No. 30777/59. Classes 23 and 82(1). Magnesium alloy is recovered from magnesium foundry residues by rotating a body of molten residue while cooling until solidified and then removing the solid flux layer. The solidification may be effected in a horizontal, internally-tapered drum 10 having end plate rings 11, 12 each detachably secured to the drum by tapered pins 13, 14. Bands 16, 17 on the drum seat on rolls 20-23 the rolls 20, 21 being driven by a motor 36. The molten residue (if necessary with the addition of a flux) is poured into the drum and rotated until solidified. The end plates are then removed, the solid body extracted and the outer flux layer chipped off. If the alloy contains zirconium, subsequent to the removal of the flux layer the body is soaked in water to remove the contaminated intermediate layer.
