A container having spaced inner and outer side walls is made by clamping a thermoplastic sheet 21 across a mould 24 having a reentrant part 35, heating the sheet, applying a slight suction to the underside of the sheet, Fig. 4, moving a plunger 37 down and shutting off the suction, applying suction to the upper side of the sheet Fig. 6, shutting off the suction and moving the plunger 37 down to the Fig. 7 position. A strong suction is then applied to the lower side of the sheet to mould it to its final form, Fig. 8. If the part 35 is so long that it prevents the sheet from taking up the Fig. 4 position, it is mounted on a plunger, Fig. 9 (not shown) to allow it to be moved to and from its operative position.
