Abstract

The invention comprises steroid compounds of the general formula <FORM:0882388/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 represents a halogen atom or a hydroxy, acyloxy or alkyl sulphonate group, and R represents a hydrogen atom, and when R1 represents a fluorine atom, R represents an acyl radical derived from an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid containing not more than 9 carbon atoms, and the preparation thereof by treating 6a -methyl-17a -hydroxy-progesterone with iodine in the presence of an aqueous inorganic alkali to form the above 21-iodo-6a -methyl-17a -hydroxy-progesterone, if necessary treating this compound with alkali metal acylates to form the above 21-acylates, such as the 21-acetate, if necessary hydrolysing the 21-acylates to form the above 21-hydroxy compound, if necessary treating the 21-hydroxy compound with alkyl sulphonyl halides in the presence of an amine to form the above 21-alkyl sulphonates, if necessary treating the 21-alkyl sulphonates with alkali metal fluorides to form the above 21-fluoro-6a -methyl-17a -hydroxy-progesterone and, if necessary, esterifying this compound to form the required 17-acylates, e.g. those derived from formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric caproic, oenanthic, caprylic, cyclopentyl and cyclohexylacetic acids.
