In a safety device to prevent unwarranted opening of a vehicle door, the interior handle may be rendered ineffective to operate the catch by means of a remotely controlled disengageable coupling. As shown in Fig. 2 the handle d operates the catch e by means of rods c 1 , C 2 between which is interposed the coupling consisting of a lost-motion device and comprising members a 1 , a 2 fixed to rods c 1 , c 2 respectively. The casing i of a Bowden wire j is fixed in member a 1 , and the wire passes through member a 2 and terminates in a stop l. The wire is attached to the remote control lever n by means of which the stops may be placed in the full line position, in which actuation of the handle d will cause the stop to engage the member a 2 and withdraw the catch e; or in the dotted line position in which the wire j will pass face l, through the member a 2 when the handle is actuated, without withdrawing the catch. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the lost motion device comprises members r, s locked together by engagement in an annular groove r 1 of a cylindrical detent u which may be withdrawn by the Bowden wire to provide lost motion between the rods c 1 c 2 . The Bowden wire may be replaced by a hydraulic transmission.
