Abstract
882,242. Baling-machines. POWELL, W. N., POWELL, A. F., and ANDERTON, H. Nov. 29, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 26492/56. Class 94(1). In a "pick-up" baling machine, the baling ram is reciprocated along an axis disposed substantially at right angles to the direction of movement of the machine i.e. parallel to the axis of the ground wheels. The machine shown comprises a "pick-up" 110, Figs. 1 and 2, a baling chamber 111 whose axis is parallel to that of the ground wheels 115, 116, a baling chamber extension 112 and a ram 114 reciprocable by a crank 141 in the chamber 111, the picked-up crop being fed in to the chamber 111 by an auger 120 and a forking device 121 to which a compound oscillatory motion is imparted by a crank 122. When the machine is being towed for operation, the swingable tow-bar 118 may be locked in the position shown in Fig. 5, so that the path of the tractor 117 is clear of the path of the "pick-up", but when the machine is being moved along a road, the tow-bar may be locked in the position 118<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 6, so that the path of the tractor is within the wheel base of the machine. The overall width of the machine may be reduced by swinging the pivoted sides 132, 133 of the extension 112 to the positions 132<SP>1</SP> and 133<SP>1</SP> shown in Fig. 6. Alternatively, the extension 112 may be swingable as a whole about a pivot bracket 131 for this purpose. The ram 114 is fitted with a cutter blade 151, which co-operates with a fixed blade 152 to shear off excess material fed to the baling chamber, and is provided with wheels running on guide rails of circular or polygonal, e.g. hexagonal cross-section. The twine knotters 129 are disposed on top of the chamber 111, and the tying needles 145 pass upwardly through the chamber and slots 147 formed in the ram 114. Operation of the knotters is initiated by a star wheel 130. The shafts operating the various parts of the machine are driven through gearing by a universally-jointed shaft 155 coupled to the tractor power take-off. Specification 882,243 is referred to.
