Abstract
882,193. Making molten glass. UNION DES VERRERIES MECANIQUES BELGE S.A. Oct. 21, 1959 [Nov. 19, 1958], No. 35688/59. Class 56. Floats or floating barriers employed in glass making are made more resistant to thermochemical and thermo-physical attacks due to the molten glass and atmosphere in the furnace by subjecting those areas most exposed to attack to internal and/or external artificial cooling. Cooling of the head of the floats 4, Figs. 9, 11, 14 may be provided by circulating air or water through tubes, the float 4, Fig. 9, being provided with a semi-circular tube 11 secured along the top 15 of the float as in grooves 20, 21, the float 4, Fig. 1,1, having a tube 8 with a flat face 17 mounted on the top 15 and the float 4, Fig. 14, having two branches of a hairpin tube 13a, 13b secured by a cement 16 or refractory earth to the top 15. A number of other examples of tubes and securing means are disclosed. The tubes, as tube 8, Fig. 11, may have lateral apertures 22, 23 which direct the air passing through partly on to the surface of the glass melt 2 to cool the glass adjacent thereto. As shown in Fig. 17, barriers 1a, 1b have tubes 13e, 13f passing through the; heads themselves connected to conduits 26, 27 for cooling water. The tubes may be of steel or refractory earth which may be the same as that of the floats or barriers themselves, or of electro cast silico-aluminous material. The tube may also be coated, as with a ceramic material.
